NELLCO Symposium 2013

Registration for the 2013 NELLCO Symposium is now open to NELLCO Members! The Symposium will be held March 14-15, 2013 at the Albany Law School in Albany, NY.

The theme this year is Building a Collaboration-Driven Organization. We have developed the agenda based on the feedback we received last year. We hope we've created a conference that will balance the needs of our members to participate in collegial exchanges with the opportunity to gain new insights and skills.

Each Interest Group (IG) will have a half-day carved out for the work of their group. Content will be developed for the sessions by the Interest Group Leaders. There is no overlap between the IG sessions this year, giving everyone the opportunity to attend several Interest Group sessions if they wish.

In addition to the Interest Group Meetings, we will offer half-day Six Thinking Hats Workshops. Each of the four workshops, which run opposite each of the IG sessions, will be limited to 30 participants. The Six Thinking Hats are an excellent collaboration tool and I urge you to find time during the two day conference to attend. You can select your session when you register.

The third option for attendees in each half-day time slot is an Unconference Session. If you've completed the Six Hats workshop and attended the IG meetings of interest to you, you can join the Unconference group. There you will set the agenda collaboratively, using open space meeting principles.

We hope we'll get the right formula through trial and error, but we won't know if YOU don't come!

NELLCO and LIPA Collaborate on Print Legal Materials

Yesterday, NELLCO announced Preserving America's Legal Materials in Print (PALMPrint), an exciting collaborative pilot project aimed at developing a shared, cirulating collection of primary, U.S. legal materials in print. Working with the Legal Information Preservation Alliance (LIPA), the two organizations jointly have committed to underwrite $120,000.00 of the total cost of the three-year project. The remaining costs will be shared by the participating libraries. LIPA and NELLCO hope to secure commitments from at least 50 members in order to keep participation costs to $1600 per library, per year. If we reach the larger goal of 100 member libraries participating, the annual cost will be less than $1,000.00 per library!

More information about the project is available in this overview. A series of informational webinars will be held during the week of Oct. 22 and members are encouraged to sign up to get more detailed information and Q&A.

Several years of exploration, research and listening and learning have gone into this project so far. Librarians across the country are working on the issue of the retention of and persistent access to print materials in an increasingly digital world. A number of different print archiving projects are currently underway, and include both centralized and distributed models. The Center for Research Libraries hosts a list-serv, the Print Archive Network (PAN) for those involved and interested in the future of print.

NELLCO and LIPA are thrilled to launch this project and hope it will serve as a model for a collaborative solution to print retention, allowing libraries to make different decisions about library space at the local level. In this way, libraries can continue to be responsive to the changing needs of their users secure in the knowledge that primary print materials are within reach, and under the stewardship of the collaborative.

A dedicated committee has brought us to this point and we are grateful for their efforts on behalf of the member libraries. The committee members are:

—Melanie Dunshee (Duke)
—Paul George (UPenn)
—Margie Maes (LIPA)
—Karen Quinn (RI State)
Tracy Thompson-Przylucki (NELLCO)
—Tory Trotta (Arizona State)

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact NELLCO, or any member of the committee.

An Ode: Judy Gire to Retire

Back in 1983 Judith Norcross came to see

If she might participate with those who would collaborate.

Fifteen directors at the table decided that they might be able

to share the risks and the rewards of sometimes acting in accord,

so they set out to formalize the group that they would organize.

A vison! Mission! Bylaws, too! We'll rule the world when we are through!

Their power-lust was finally sated when NELLCO, inc. was created.

Now almost 30 years expire and on the Board sits Judy Gire,

The last of the founding library dirs to hang up her NELLCO spurs.

Much has changed across these years and there's been lots of shifting gears,

The regional org that NELLCO once was is now an international cause,

we've gone from no web to 2 or 3.0 web

and from desktops that dial-up to cloud-hosting a mile up.

Judy's been there through it all, answering every NELLCO roll call,

so we thank her for her vision and the leadership she's given

and we wish her all the best in whatever may come next!

This interactive event consists of two full days, with the first day dedicated to Content and Collaboration. Industry partners and law librarians will have the opportunity for robust exchanges in small classroom settings. Holding Interest Group meetings during this event will allow attendees to participate in more than one interest group without travelling to many different locations throughout the year.

Day two offers a series of hour long content sessions and workshops aligned with the remaining themes: Curation and Innovation. Some of the sessions on day two will include Reverse Strategic Planning, an innovative technique for examining your library's infrastructure, and Twitter 101, during which participants will set up their own Twitter account, generate their first tweet, and learn how and whom to follow (@nellcoinc!). Theresa McCue will offer sessions throughout the day on using the new NELLCO website for trials, acquisitions and renewals. We'll also offer sessions on managing a budget, managing your time, and improving your effectiveness as a speaker.
